AC drops Beirut inagural flt due to "national security"

http://micro.newswire.ca/releases/Ju...8.html/13213-0

Air Canada's new Montreal-Beirut non-stop will not go ahead this week.

Air Canada has received written
notification from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) that the carrier
will no longer be permitted to operate non-stop flights between Montral and
Beirut. Citing "reasons of national security," the federal government directed
the CTA to suspend the license which it had granted Air Canada on March 28,
2003.

Convenient timing. Wonder how the load factor was looking prior to the plug being pulled...

National security, that's bizarre? Do they not have Customs and Immigration offices checking arriving passengers? Sounds fishy to me. There must be more to it.

FWIW, the DFAIT is advising Canadians to steer clear of southern Lebanon where Hezbollah is most active, but simply advises vigilance and caution in other areas.

On the whole, I agree it sounds awfully convenient, but we are a more skeptical group than most when it comes to AC

Wonder how much this little escapade will cost AC in protecting all of the booked pax? This seemed like a bonehead move from square one.

It sounds like this isn't even a "made-in-Canada" decision. Just bowing to the wishes of the almighty ones:
