"If he changes to another day/flight than he is responsible for the fare difference as well isn't he? Why not just book the flights that meet the best cost/schedule combo (even with the stopover in YYZ) and not worry about changes to the itin?

If the fare is available then he can rebook for $25 including reroute and any extra airport fees I presume.
