What surprises me is that they were in a taxi, as opposed to some crew van.

This crew was clearly YYZ based.

Were they being shuttled somewhere? Or were they out for fun?

The accident happened at 05:20 and they were scheduled to operate a flight at 07:00. Feel free to speculate.

Seems they would have been being shuttled in from the overnight hotel.

The timing makes sense. Generally, pilots are supposed to check in an hour before their departure.

Ah, sorry. I missed that part.

I hope they weren't having fun

Hope both pilots and taxi driver are alright. The accident sounds pretty serious.

With the thread title, for a brief moment i thought it was an accident while taxiing at the airport.

Hope everyone's is ok.

I wonder if this had a ripple effect regarding crew?

This crew was clearly YYZ based.
Crew travel quite frequently via taxi, especially when there are only two people being taken from the hotel to the airport or vice versa.

No speculation necessary, the timing is right in-line with the amount of time needed to get the crew from the hotel to the airport in time for their flight. Crew typically have to be at the airport 1:30 before their flight departure and on board the aircraft between 60 minutes and 45 minutes before departure depending on aircraft size and destination.

Perhaps an argument for crew staying at the YVR Fairmont?

I suppose if they have YVR cabin crew working the flight, that might mean only the pilots are coming in from a hotel.

I doubt the YVR Fairmont, with the rates they command, wants that business. Plus, most crew contracts require a city center hotel for stays over a certain amount of time.

Lots of crews stay at the Fairmont there. I see Westjet cabin crew all the time there. Air Canada less so but on occasion yes

Short layovers, AC crews use airport hotels.
Longer layovers they stay downtown.
I don't know how many hours rest is required for a downtown stay.

If I recall one AC pilot told me 10-11 hour layovers are airport hotels, over that then downtown hotels.

I congratulate Air Canada on this new policy of holding planes for people who encounter road traffic problems.
