Question Chances of Getting an earlier flight on Standby in J with luggage?

Hello AC gurus

We already bought our Christmas vacation flights all in Bus Class:
Dec 20 YXY-YVR-YUL-PTP

We are scheduled to leave YXY at 6am arr at YVR 8:15
BUT the flight we are booked on to YUL only leaves YVR at 16:35
that's 8 hours layover, now I like the lounge as much as the next person but that's along frikking time.

What are the chances of getting on an earlier flight to YUL (j-class) from YVR?
there's a flight at 9:35 and at 11:30.
The ticket says changes are permitted day of departure at check in or at airport free of charge

We are going to have checked bags, do you think it's possible?

And if so will we have to pay change fees?
When you check in, try to do an SDC (same day change) if possible. In this way your luggage will be tagged to the earlier flight.

As for standing by with checked bags, I have been told no, but it can work out in theory.

As for fees, it varies depends on your ticket.

Also I like how you call J class "bus" class. This is very an accurate description.

I've stood by for an earlier flight in J with checked luggage. They tagged it as standby or something.

Went to gate at t-30, got new BP, got seat, luggage arrived at destination.

I didn't even ask for ask for standby, it was offered to avoid a 5h wait.

Standby is processed after upgrades, so it's very easy to be offered a seat in Y in these situations.

As @songsc mentioned, when you get to YXY, tell them you want to do a same day change of your YVR-YUL, and they should be able to process it right there, so you'll be confirmed, and your luggage will be tagged appropriately.

Thank you

It's a few months away, the schedules might change a few times before that..

I will give it a try on the day of the flight.

This will not work for connecting flights, only the original fight.

How did they get the stand by tag on your checked baggage for the last connecting segment?

Good question. I think maybe I collected my baggage in the US? As you do for an Intl-Dom.

It was a couple of years ago, all a bit of a blur after an ULH but I definitely remember a lady saying and we'll put you on standby for this earlier flight as it made it tight to squeeze in a UA shower

And I'm 99% sure it involved a standby tag. But maybe that was just what I saw when it arrived in YYZ? Either way it worked. I'm not saying it's standard practice or even expected though. It is AC after all.

So you are taking about something completely different than op situation, giving misleading info.
