Standby is processed after upgrades, so it's very easy to be offered a seat in Y in these situations.

songsc mentioned, when you get to YXY, tell them you want to do a same day change of your YVR-YUL, and they should be able to process it right there, so you'll be confirmed, and your luggage will be tagged appropriately.
