If your desired flights happen to have regular (non-IKK) award availability, you could upgrade those flights now using miles (yes - a rather poor use of miles). Once you earn e-upgrades valid beyond 02/2018, you could cancel the original upgrade/booking and upgrade using e-upgrade credits.

It is possible that if one uses the strategy, the R inventory may not re-appear, and you are no further ahead.

Called the SE desk the other day, who then called the help desk. Answer was they had no solutions for me; I had to wait for eupgrades valid through to Feb 2019.
