Dreams Won't Take Flight

Well, at least not on the L10A.

Sadly, an annual event is being put on the scrap heap because of AC's current financial situation.

Every year they fly their old Lockheed L10A on charity flights across Canada, and donate the money to Dreams Take Flight - which pays to fly children to disneyland from various stations. This year, unfortunately, the old bird is in need of some frame maintenance and AC has elected not to pay to have it done because their money would best be spent elsewhere.

Probably a fiscally responsible decision, but sad nevertheless.

I had the good fortune to take this charity flight - and it was very entertaining (but no aeroplan points).

Forgive the dense question but I don't understand. People donated money to fly the L1011 or it was used to fly the kids to Disneyland?

And AC still flew a 1011 last year??? Old bird indeed then!

Actually it's an old Lockheed Electra 10A. I think they sold flights in the old plane and donated the proceeds towards the Disney World programme.

It's based here in YWG. If you have a chance, even a couple of hour layover, the Western Canadian Aviation Museum is located at the airport (probably $5 cab) and houses the L10 and many others, including old AC Viscount.

Don't you have enough points to fly 50 kids down to disneyland?

Yep....

But I could not affords the taxes x 50...!

security fees x50 and the AIP x50.

Cheaper to buy the plane....

Its a cool looking ride, I would pay for a trip in that...

Maybe AC or who ever owns it should let us charter it for a FT do

Well, it's not going anywhere for a while apparently. I highly doubt it would be available as a charter. The pilots aren't paid to fly it, it's all done on a volunteer basis.

We should have done one of the charity flights as an FT event; you could book the whole plane for $1400 - 1/2 hour flight.

Maybe next year.

Totally agree with this. When we were there we bribed the pimply faced "curator" and he let us climb up into the Viscount. That was a masterpiece! Wide seats, curtains on the windows - all original interior. Really cool. Do it if you can.

It would have been a better idea to use the 1011 rather than this one. How come Air Canada didnt use the EX-CP DC-10s in their long range fleet? Seems like a waste of tri engine planes.
