Oh YUK, I wonder if a gentle reminder of protocols would be in order to this person, risky I know but sometimes one has to just say something!

Oh, I forgot to mention, last time through YYZ TB MLL at the crack of dawn, a guy had a large ziploc bag (like, not the kind you might have for TSA but the large size that would hold a loaf of bread) and it was jammed with hard boiled eggs. I am allergic to eggs so I did not notice the absence of eggs on the buffet, but I'm sure if there was an egg left, it was because it would not fit in the bag. Seriously? How long a trip is he taking? Stocking up a restaurant at the other end? Maybe they need to start halving the eggs before putting them out, to make them messier to purloin in bulk that way.

Honestly, I need to know if bad hygiene is a Canadian thing because I've never seen this level of behavior so consistently in any airport lounge in the world - the worse I usually see in other lounges is a foreign person who doesn't know better take their dirty dish back to the buffet, and I'll tell them to put it down and go get a clean one, or instruct a staff member to do so, but I rarely if ever see hands in serving dishes with such predictability as when at a Maple Leaf Lounge.

I don't see any risk - maybe as an American I am naturally more of a loudmouth which goes against Canadian customs, but during my last visit to the YYZ TB MLL, some blue-collar type had his entire hand shoved into the cookie jar digging around for a cookie, so yes, I yelled very loudly that it was disgusting and to use the damn utensils - the hand came out and he walked away, and yes, I felt better (especially since I had taken my cookies long before his finger assault). Adults should know better and I have no shame about yelling.

But to answer your question, yes we Canadians are slobs, but not as slobby as others.

Only socks is fine.
It's when it's socks and crocs - that's where I draw the line!
But this is totally YOLO to be standing only in socks. And in the MLL! Hopefully they're only dipping food into the sauce.

My wife is very good at doing that sort of things, very nicely. Once, at GRU, she told a "granfina" Brazilian lady in Portuguese feeling all the cheese buns before picking one, "you touch it you take it." Next, lady was sitting right in front of us in the business section of a domestic flight... Which we took to Rio, while they went on to wy up in the Nordeste. Similar story at the local supermarket, Superstore, to an older Chinese lady touching some bread or buns before choosing one, but in Mandarin.

Very nice of your wife to not feel entitled enough to yell at a complete stranger in public. Kudos on her handling of the situation without escalating it.

Believe me it's not a YYZ-MLL thing, as many here will testify protocols for behaviour is cross cultural/cross continent/cross country!
Right now I'm thinking of the PP lounge in TSL the MLL lounge LAX, IAH, LHR, CDG...etc etc.
What would be uncommon is someone "yelling very loudly" over the breaches of protocol....

Forgot to mention that a few months ago someone was watching PBMC1 on full blast in the YYZ Dom MLL... For a second I thought @Sean Peever was there.

At other lounges, I generally only see people taking dirty plates back to the buffet - and in those cases I ask the staff to intervene because it's more of a cultural problem vs being selfish and dumb, although there are exceptions like the fool in the LAX *A Lounge last week who refused the manager's instructions to get a clean plate - twice - and told the manager he didn't have to - and then had to be threatened with expulsion from the lounge if they did not comply. That one needed a good yelling-at, but he was expelled before I got there, but the manager was telling me the story while I had him chasing other customers who were taking back dirty plates. He felt it was a losing battle, so they are considering multi-lingual signs at the buffet with instructions, or explaining the buffet rules as people are checked into the lounge.

Something I had suggested (also with a please and thank you and a cherry on top with whipped cream) of the YYZ MLL manager - my suggestion/request was denied on the spot and not even acknowledged for consideration. She said something about "not being allowed to...".

Ah, contracting out. A solution to the problem of wanting to decrease service, ultimately pay more, and finding new and exciting way to frustrate customers, and employees on both sides of the contract.
