"CanJet Announces Moncton-St. John’s Non-Stop Service"

CanJet, eastern Canada’s original low-cost discount airline, announced today that it will introduce new non-stop jet service between Moncton and St. John’s as well as Moncton and Toronto on September 9th. The Moncton-St. John’s non-stop service will operate Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with the Moncton-Toronto non-stop service operating daily. CanJet will be accepting bookings on these new flights effective Monday, July 29th.

Julie Gossen, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, CanJet Airlines, said, “Excellent support from our customers and the travel industry in the New Brunswick/PEI region for our Moncton service, combined with growing demand for non-stop service to Toronto and Newfoundland, has contributed to this decision.” She went on to state, “We are delighted that this new non-stop Moncton-St. John’s service will effectively link three of our Atlantic provinces. Based in this region, CanJet is able to respond quickly to regional market demand and this is rapidly making our airline the preferred choice of Atlantic Canadian air travellers.”

Ms. Gossen said the new CanJet Moncton-St. John’s non-stop flight will be the only scheduled jet service to St. John’s for New Brunswick and PEI customers. She pointed out the new fall and winter schedule will see the discontinuation of the CanJet Moncton-Montreal non-stop summer service while the airline’s fleet will be utilized to meet customer demand for Moncton non-stop flights to both St. John’s and Toronto.

CanJet Airlines is a division of IMP Group Limited, Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of Canada’s largest aviation and aerospace companies. CanJet provides low fare scheduled services to six destinations in Central and Eastern Central Canada with Boeing 737 aircraft.

This is where it gets interesting. As we all know, WestJet has been flying YHM-Moncton. I wonder why CanJet didn't chose something where they were not (as close to) competing with another LoCo.

I think the answer is that when you come right down to it, these guys aren't really any better than AC, or the American carriers. One of them proves there's money to be made flying Toronto-area to Moncton, so instead of finding another underserved route, the other guys just jump in and match them.

Or I suppose one could spin it that WestJet's determined Moncton is a good place to fly into from southern Ontario, and CanJet feels it's still an underserved market. But I believe my original comment.

Canjet also said they are pulling out of the Eastern Triangle, I believe in early September.

This past Wednesday I was on the same day YYZ-YOW-YYZ. Great service, and crew, many of whom were around the first time. But the load factors were really light. No more than 30 on each flight. I counted the number from YHZ-YOW that I was joining, they had only 21 on board.

They give the impression of existing in a vacuum. I paid only $68 each way (plus taxes) and yet the Tango flight was much more heavily booked, and a higher price to boot.

Actually, Moncton does seem to be the most geographically advantageous location, with PEI, Mirimichi, Fredericton, and Saint John all within an hour and a half drive. Also, Tango has already started flying out of Fredericton and Saint John, a city Canjet briefly serviced last year. As for demand, I remember that last summer both Westjet and Canada 3000 each had two flights a day out of Moncton, but it is now somewhat unfortunate to see Westjet and Canjet competing so directly with almost identical schedules.
