eUpgrades while earning on UA/US
As many of you know, I will no longer be SE as of February 28. I was considering a YYC-HNL run on Dec 30th to attend a NYE party (and get my 3 needed AC segments for E35k) but I decided I was too busy and if I want lounge access I can just buy UA/US Club membership. Anyway, the point is, I have 110 eUpgrade credits sitting around expring Feb 28 and I still do a fair bit of TB flying where I still quite like AC. In 2011 when I was an AC*SE/CO*S, I used to wait until I got my UA/CO UDU and then swap my FF# to AC so I could earn on AC. This year I'd like to do the opposite and get my AC upgrades and then swap my FF# to UA/US. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

If your upgrade clears prior to check-in, you can go into AC's Manage my Bookings and swap out your AE number for that of another FFP. In fact, I did that yesterday, and I still have my seat in J.
If your upgrade does not clear prior to check-in and you must play gate lotto, you cannot change your AE number as I believe it is required to be placed on the upgrade waitlist when using e-Ups. If your upgrade clears at the gate, you can technically change your FFN to that of another program. In reality, you may encounter some resistance from the GA/other AC personnel who refuse to change your FFN/claim it cannot be done/claim that you will lose your J seat.

Thanks, I had a similar experience with UA agents who told me that I'd get kicked out of C if I switched my FF# too. I usually book my flights 6-7 days out so if there's no R when the SE window opens I probably won't even bother booking AC unless it's the cheapest.

I ve done this with AC three times, changing after sponsored eupgrades clear, if you do it yourself, it's no problems, if u ask an AC agent, they won't know what they are doing, and you ll get credited to AE. Got screwed twice, luckily on short flights.

It certainly does work, as many on FT have reported, but as hydrogen points out, there can be difficulties.
Review the following thread for plenty of information:

When you say "...do it yourself..." how are you making the change yourself? Can you still manage your booking at AC.com after the upgrade clears? Please be specific on which steps you took to change the FF# 'yourself'

Keep going back to online checkin, or do it at kiosk.
