BS. Once your upgrade clears on UA, you will not be kicked out, you also won't be removed from E+.
I ve done this with AC three times, changing after sponsored eupgrades clear, if you do it yourself, it's no problems, if u ask an AC agent, they won't know what they are doing, and you ll get credited to AE. Got screwed twice, luckily on short flights.
