Anyone seen the damaged 747?

Apparantly there is an AC 747-400 out there with its winglets missing (got knocked off in YVR) but still flying. Has anyone seen it? It would be cool if anyone manages to snap a picture of it.

I'm on an AC 744 (not 74E) tomorrow. I'll see what happens...

Actually, I thought there was something funny about one of the two AC 747s I saw parked at the old Canadi>n hanger at YVR last Wednesday afternoon. One didn't have the winglets, but I thought it was just undergoing maintenance. The other one had the winglets. The had different paint jobs on the fuselage, and I cannot be sure which was without the winglets, the one with the larger AIR CANADA lettering, or the one with the more CP style paintover.

It must be the one with the "AIR CANADA" lettering then since the one with "Canadi>n" (Tail 881) on it has been parked since Oct.

Hopefully one of those photographers will snap a picture of it and put it up on airliners.net.

They bolt on, but when hit by another object snap-off.

The "parked" aircraft in Vancouver may have had the winglet removed to replace the damaged one on the aircraft still flying. Since the downtime for the -400 fleet is only scheduled onece a week and in Toronto it may take awhile to fix. Generally the maintenance days are Monday and Tuesday so maybe it is being repaired now.

The wingtip got damaged when one AC 747 hit another AC 747. One of them was parked while another one was being towed. They hit wing to wing. (Tail 382 & 385)

So the 747-400 can fly without winglets? It must affect some performance. Where is our resident mechanic when you need him?

You can find a few pictures of 747-400's missing winglets on Airliners.net. Here is a picture of an Air New Zealand 747 operating without one:

Superdawg, notice you have nothing on Starwood on your site. Is this coming? Interesting project. How long have you been running this site?

Thanks superdawg! I remember an incident (I forgot which airline) where a 744 lost one of its winglets because it bonked into a light post while taxiing toward the gate.

I have been running the site for around 4 months now.

Starwood, Mariott, Priority Club are all coming soon. Hope you enjoyed the site.

Apparently the winglets are not part of the 744's M.E.L. The 744 is capable of "normal" operations without one winglet, or both, although range might be affected. Note that the short-range version of the 744, the 74D used by NH and JL, don't have winglets.
