I guess with T3 virtually empty at the domestic end [er, centre], there are lots of gates and the TAA will be cutting their prices to attract WestJet and anybody else into the YYZ market.
If a new Royal/CanJet can get pulled together from the ashes of the old, a reasonable spine of competition can be reintroduced nationally. Remember, Kinnear said he was not going to go "wing to wing" with AC, then proceded to do just that. And he went down in flames.
But can WestJet make it in the long haul game? I suppose AC is proving you can do without a lot of the so-called frills on 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 hour flights -- though meals are still a staple of these long hauls on the mainline, and some form of entertainment is offered -- so this may not be a factor for those not wanting to spend much on their transportation.

Greetings from the YYC Maple Leaf lounge.
Flew AC 119 YYZ - YYC at noon today. Waiting for a flight to YEG. I get an extra 1,000 Q Miles by going through YYC.
Food: Choice of cold chicken or salmon however no salmon so chicken or nothing. No pink boarding pass. Y had a salad with strips of ham and chicken. They did show a full length movie. It was a Walt Disney animated movie called Atlantis something.
The FA came and spoke to me as she knew I was upset about the food in J. It seems they don't like serving this crap anymore than the pax like eating it. So complain she advised. If I get the same food on my return flight I will put it into an envelope and mail it to
Uncle Milty. This is a full Y ticket and the cost is $2,800.00.
Near the end of the flight the F.A. came through J and gave everyone a present. It is a Vision Elite pen. Will not leak at high altitudes and will write upside down on the ceiling of a spaceship.
Have to run for my YEG flight.
Biggles.

On another note, why is AC so obsess with feeding cold plates to their J pax? Are they trying to conserve energy on board so that they don't have to heat up the food or don't have to have an extra FA working the galley?

I feel your pain. US was notorious for serving the infamous cold chicken meal in short-haul F until the 9/11 cutbacks. I'm glad they've now been replaced with the all-you-can-eat snack basket offerings of chips, milano cookies, sky mix, dried num-nums, etc.
