LMU vs. Same Day Change

LMU vs. Same Day Change
Hi all -
Wondering how best to not screw myself in this situation:
- Currently booked on PVG-YVR-YYZ
- Would like to switch to PVG-YYZ (same day change at PVG)
- Both have lots of room in J
Work has approved me doing LMU, so that is excellent. What should be my order of operations:
- check in for my scheduled flight, hope for the LMU and accept
- get to airport and try to change to the PVG-YYZ direct?
Two questions:
1. Is this correct?
2. What happens to the LMU (price/upgrade) if I change flights?
Ideally I would:
- pay for the LMU on the PVG-YVR-YYZ
- pay the Same Day Change
- end up in J from PVG-YYZ direct.
Thoughts?

any thoughts on what happens if I get the LMU but then change to a flight in Y - refunded LMU?
(that said, I would probably take the longer flight if it meant J)

checked in at T-24, but unfortunately not offered a LMU... even though it is J9Y0 and J5Y9 on my two segments... any idea why it would not be offered in this scenario?
Will try at the airport tomorrow I suppose... or hope for the OpUp on the PVG-YVR flight
