Star Alliance Runf the World trip
I am about to book an around the world ticket on *Alliance as it is by far the least costly travel option for what I am doing. Has anyone done this? Can I use eupgrades on the AC legs? Can you get purchased LMUs on the other airlines? Flying lufthansa, egyptair, SG etc...

a few notes
I've just retired from doing them, having completed my 13th time on the *RTW.
You can pay for the following upgrades:
LH/LX upgrades were too expensive and Austrian never offered them when I investigated them. SG LMUs I have not requested before.
Using TG: $ 925 one way upgrade to business from either CDG, OSL, CPH or MXP.
Within Asia: TG, approximately $ 340 from BKK - ICN or TPE. A bit more to NRT.
Using SK: Economy Extra $ 500 one way from CPH or ARN to BKK. Not a bad seat, meals come quicker, use the priority line and you get a shoe bag.
Just flew EgyptAir from BKK-CDG via CAI:
Upgrades can be bought at the counter for the BKK-CAI route for about 12,000 Bht, about 350.00 and well worth it for a nine hour flight.
For the CAI-CDG routing I did, it was about the same, and the seats are lie flat and comfortable. It's a bit tricky: you have to go to the transfer desk, they will do all of the paperwork, then escorting you to the ticket counter outside security and you will pay for the upgrade there and they will escort you back.
Please note: Egypt Air would prefer you pay with cash for any upgrade.
You can use your miles on certain flights to get Star Alliance Awards on certain legs. I guess use them if you have to. It could be a great miles burn if you need to get rid of some.
I would suggest purchasing the RTW from Air Canada no matter where you start as their rates department is spectacular and you will actually get flights you want rather than going into LH hell once you get to Europe.
eUpgrades only usable on AC Metal.
UA has given us Economy Extra seating previously on NRT-HNL flights and onward to KOA and back to LAX free of charge. It might have been the crews. We paid for it going ORD-AMS
