Partially correct.

They would have cleared together as SE's even though she is an E if they were on the same PNR and they had cleared the waitlist before check-in had opened.

Once it is T-24 and check-in has opened, if you are still on the waitlist (i.e. relegated to Aerolotto) it is the status of each individual that counts.

I have yet another upgrade waitlist order question. (Apologies if this already been answered.)

A colleague and I were travelling on the NRT-YYZ. We were both waitlisted at the 96 hour window (mine about 2 minutes before his). However his upgrade cleared about 12 hours before the flight, I didn't get the upgrade until at the gate. We're both Elite so that shouldn't have had an impact. However, my upgrade request was nominated by Mrs. Lynchpin_yyz (also an E), whereas his was with his own points. Additionally, I checked in online at the 24 hour mark and he didn't. Could the fact that I had checked in moved me out of a position to get an upgrade if R-space opened up, or was it simply a matter of being nominated that placed me lower in priority?

An important detail is missing... were you both on the same fare class?

whats your boarding pass sequence #? and what is your colleague's boarding pass sequence #?

you mentioned he was upgraded 12 hours before the flight, was that when he checked in? or was that still on the eupgrade page?

if i recall what AY said, if you requested upgrade as a nominee you are first waitlisted under the member's status (if travelling together)....if not, i wonder if they just consider every nominee as non status until at the airport when they could physically validate/check.......

Not sure what his boarding pass sequence # is, but I do know he didn't check in until at the airport, around 2.5 hours prior to the flight, so he was upgraded prior to checking in.

I do recall that AY mentioned something about nominees, but I couldn't find the details.

What I was most curious about is if the fact that I checked in moved me to the airport waitlist whereas my colleague who hadn't checked in was still under the control of inventory management and was upgraded when R-space was opened up about 12 hours before the flight. Of note, at the 24-hour mark when I checked in the flight was showing J-9, Y-0 (so likely oversold in the back, which I can confirm since there was at least one person assigned a seat at the gate).

i am so lost by it too...... i stopped thinking.....

but your theory does make sense.....if you checked in, your transferred over to airport control (aka an operational waitlist for the GA to clear)....whereas your friend would still be in the eupgrade waitlist that is approved by whoever reviews advance loads at head office.

but then isnt the complete list gets transferred over?

As far as I know R space is never opened during the 24 hour period. If it is, maybe that is what I am doing wrong.

but they do advance clearance for some waitlisted people (if they feel they could confirm due to empty seats and a low potential of last minute show ups)

It's a trade secret what factors exactly go into clearing WL. Probably changes all the time and would be too complex to publish and adjudicate.
