I personally would not head to CPT for 24 hours. With two younger kids in tow - not worth it. Even my wife and I on our own would not consider CPT for 24 hours. When you take away flying time, transfers, etc., you may only get 6 hours to have a look around.
Stay the night in JNB, and try the Red Bus City Tour, or Acrobranch in Melrose.
Also look at hotels that are linked to Sandton Mall.

Sandton, without a doubt. 10x more happening there. But at the end of the day, it's a mall (or a couple of malls), so it can get stale quickly. Plan breakaways accordingly. Lots of kids-friendly restaurants; I recommend Primi Piatti (chain) - they look after the kids well, and the grown-up options are pretty good too for a chain resto.
If the kids get antsy with the usual entertainment offerings, take them to Serendipity; great little place.

Depending on your predilections, and in no particular order: Cradle of Humankind (recommended), Sun City / Pilanesberg, Soweto, Dullstroom, lunch at Mount Grace, Golden Gate National Park and Clarens (further afield, but awesome part of the world)

They remained in place while we were there. I was happy for the side panels as there was lots of bushwhacking. Why the question? are they required outside the concession? There was one occasion where we left the concession to go to a public area where we could find Hippo.
