Criteria
- You must be travelling on A3 or OA metal - codeshares are not included.
- The original ticket must be issued on either A3 (390) or OA (050) ticket stock.
- Only revenue (paid) tickets, in fare classes other than U, P & T on a GoLight fare basis, can be upgraded, but not redemption tickets.
- All flights on the ticket must be on A3 or OA metal.
- There must be award availability in I-class for the upgrades to clear. You can check this by logging in to M&B then going to https://en.aegeanair.com/milesandbon...t/spend-miles/ The results page will initially be a calendar. To see Business availability, you have to click through to the next step. (You can also use a free or paid tool such as ANA website, UA website (looking for saver award space), Aeroplan, AwardNexus or ExpertFlyer to check for availability.)
- One coupon per person per journey leg is required - so, for example, TXL-ATH-SKG and return via the same route would require four coupons per person.
- Anyone can be upgraded using the coupons - you do not have to be travelling on the same booking or even the same plane.
Procedure
- Call A3 to request the upgrade. The phone numbers are listed at https://aegeanairlines.custhelp.com/ (most of them should go to the same call centre in Greece).
- If successful, a new ticket will be issued (with a new number). The PNR will remain unchanged.
- You are liable for any extra taxes applicable to Business Class (e.g. APD from the UK). Sometimes this gets charged, sometimes it doesn't - if it's due and you're not charged because the agent forgets, you've just been lucky.
- If there's no immediate I-class availability, you can ask to be waitlisted for upgrade. The ability to waitlist was reported to have been removed in August 2016, but was again possible in September. Check with the agent - option available on May 2018.
- in case you requested to be waitlisted for upgrade and want to check if the customer care agent made the changes on your booking you can check the reservation on checkmytrip.com (click here), the leg you requested the upgrade will be shown here as ”Waitlisted”.
- If you wish to upgrade one segment of a multi-segment trip (e.g. XXX-ATH-YYY) and there is availability on the leg you wish to upgrade, you may still have to be waitlisted due to married segment issues. The process of clearing the waitlist is somewhat confusing and may result in frustration due to the availability seeming to disappear but in reality, this may mean that the segments have been "unmarried" and the availability has been allocated to your reservation. See post 2272 and the update in post 2294 for more details.
Benefits
- No matter what the fare basis of the original ticket, you receive full Business Class benefits after upgrade.
- This includes lounge access (useful if you're upgrading someone other than yourself who has no status, or if you've run out of Silver lounge vouchers) and full baggage allowance (it applies for first leg as well, in case you are upgraded only on the 2nd leg of your trip - confirmed on the etix).
- Because the ticket books as a redemption, the free car hire is not included.
Mileage/segment earning
- You will earn at the underlying rate of your purchased ticket in economy, not at a business class rate. Because status miles are awarded, this also counts as a segment for re-qualification purposes.
- The flights may credit automatically, but may take longer to credit than tickets that have not been changed. They may also credit as 0 miles, and later change to the correct rate. If the flights have not credited properly after a few weeks then calling A3 will rectify this rapidly.
Expiry
- The vouchers expire at the end of your membership year - they do not carry over, even if status is retained. A new set is issued every year.
- It is the date when you use the voucher that matters. It can upgrade a flight that takes place after expiry as long as you apply the voucher before.
- On upgrade from Silver to Gold, any remaining Silver upgrade coupons expire, but they are replaced by four Gold ones which expire at the end of the Gold membership year.
BEWARE
- Once you have upgraded your seat, your ticket will be reissued. Suddenly, this ticket may be VERY expensive to change. If, for instance, you later decide to travel on a different date, you will probably be required to rebook into Business, even if Economy was available for new bookings. A3 will charge you the difference from your original Economy fare to a NEW Business fare. Plus fees, taxes and whatnot. Update 18/08/2021: this appears to no longer be the case, as an upgraded ticket was changed and the underlying Economy fare was used for the upgraded segments. The coupon was "removed" from the old dates and "reapplied" to the new dates.
- Coupons will not be returned/reinstated. Once a coupon is applied, it is gone for good (the T&Cs printed on the coupons allow for date and time changes, but not route changes).
- If you want to provide your coupons to upgrade a friend's travel, it is advisable to call in yourself. Your friend can call in if they know your name, birthdate, M&B-number and the email address associated with your account. That means: Anyone who knows these particulars can use your coupons without your knowledge. They do NOT need the coupon numbers.
- Crediting upgraded segments to another program will likely fail, as it will be reported as I-class. It may be possible to retro-claim the miles.

OttoMH Well, you were upgraded for a very specific flight! I don't think you are entitled to a same-day change, but do check out the app on the day of the flight to see if the option appears.
After all, the same day change would have been made in the economy cabin with your comfort flex fare.
Similarly to that, you would need a "business class" fare (so the normal one, not the "basic") to enjoy the same perk within the business class cabin.

reading the voucher rules it seems changes are permitted via call centre according to underlying fare but will incur €23 fee. I guess you might have to forfeit your voucher if no I class available but in theory looks like you can change if your base fare allows. Not sure whether they allow it as a free same day or it now incurs fare difference.

The "pick another flight the same day" option only applies to direct Aegean flights. It sounds like you had a connecting flight which would make this not eligible.

Data point: I just changed a previously voucher-upgraded flight for the first time ever. Same flight but two days later. The process was simple and I told the agent I only wanted to actually change if the confirmed upgrade was still available. It took her a little while to check and the whole call took about 12 minutes. I had to pay the 23 Euro telephone fee, but.... meah...
Interestingly, business class loads must be quite light on LHR-ATH at the moment. I was very happy when even the original upgrade went through without going on the waiting list, but the flight I just changed is in just 12 days time. The fare difference was only 7 Euro (originally booked dirt-cheap months ago) and from the attached you can I'm only the 2nd person to select a seat up there, for now. That really surprised me at such short notice!

Of course you can ask the call center to remove the upgrade (this is only forbidden on upgraded "pass" tickets) and then basically do whatever you want with your booking.
Moreover, what Xandrios wrote should also be taken into account (same-day changes are only allowed on single-flight tickets, once there's a connections, then the option to change flights simply doesn't become available when it otherwise would).

Got 4 upgrade certs expiring tomorrow. There is no I availability on my flight so if I were to waitlist the upgrade would the voucher be used or would it expire and then when waitlist opens up, there would no longer be a voucher to use?

It would expire. I THINK a new voucher would be used.

As for your current vouchers, I guess it's already too late now, unless you can upgrade someone else in the next 3 hours. (btw sorry, can't help you with that myself, as all my future flights also currently lack I class)
It'd still be quite risky, since, if the upgrade doesn't get issued right away, there's still a good chance you'll end up using your next vouchers, so I'd say forget about it and make use of your silver vouchers as described .

I am waitlisted now for 4 sectors which intrestingly show only 2 seats booked out of 12 seats and 3 days before departure, cash upgrade challenge for the same flight cleared today yet no space for seat upgrade with vouchers.... 😀🤷♂️
Is this the new norm?

The longer answer involves considering the specific route, the time of year (for example you're going to be flying within the Catholic Easter holiday) and likely also number of wait-listed vouchers, how full economy is etc.
But I think it is almost a certainty that your upgrades will clear. Like, over 80%, I'd say about 98-99% certain, even if booking class I (award/upgrade space) never becomes available.
BTW in the T&C's of the upgrade bid it states that your bid can be accepted until up to 7 hours before departure (not 3 days!).
Which is likely also why some of my recent upgrades have cleared at around that time!

Also make sure you're actually booking "Aegean's" Flex fare on the OTA's website and not any "flexibility" deriving solely from the OTA's policies while actually booking into the "light" fare (which is often the case), which, combined with booking classes P, U or T, won't allow for an upgrade via voucher.

I've mentioned this previously, I did exactly that once (I waited) and the check-in agent at the airport told me I could have lost my seat, if the flight had been overbooked and everyone turned up at the airport before I did...!
Always perform check-in on time. It makes no (negative) difference regarding upgrade requests.
Always perform check-in on time. It makes no (negative) difference regarding upgrade requests.
I had wait-listed us for our upcoming flight just about 3 weeks ago with my 4 gold coupons.
I checked us in online as soon as it became available. In fact, this time I actually managed to get us to be the 1st-2nd-3rd and 4th to check in!
There has been zero (0) availability in booking class I (or even X for that matter) the entire time ever since this flight became available for booking and it stayed like that the whole time during the past days leading up to the check-in window and even after it (it's the week after Catholic Easter, not officially a "cut-off" period for upgrades, but still one that sees no I on my route).
3 rows of business class (12 seats), initially 2 seats reserved, then 4 and as of around 1 week ago 5, but they had at least stayed at 5 until now.
Exactly 19 hours and 12 minutes prior to the scheduled departure I got the first 2 emails confirming those (2) upgrades and 12 minutes later I got the other 2 emails.
I total I believe that a single other passenger was upgraded, since C7 changed to C2 and the seat-map also shows an additional seat reserved.
This time the system allocated us the entire 2nd row, which was still unoccupied, while putting the solo upgraded passenger alone on the right side in row 3. I couldn't choose seats during check-in, but if I could I would have picked exactly the same.
Of course we're very excited, that we were once again granted 4 upgrades on the same flight, the only drawback of this occurring so "late" being the fact that we can no longer pre-select our meals. Which, unfortunately, will be exactly the same as last time we got the 4x upgrades, the scrambled eggs + chicken muffin or the eggs + tomato sauce... So I hope we can grab something more savoury in the lounge and then just eat the joghurt from the menu or whatever we bring along for our kids (unless they somehow manage to serve them a children's option ).

I waitlisted my wife for an upgrade on an upcoming fligh with a voucher, I see both the C and Y segment in the reservation. Now check-in time has come, and it seems she was moved from 9C (Up front seating, comfortflex fare) to 12B (2nd exit row), coincidentally next to me.. But while my check-in works, hers doesn’t go through.
I was expecting her to be upgraded to C rather than moved to another seat (different PNR’s but linked at checkin time for the outbound flight). I’m hoping she will be upgraded, as is this is the flight that will get her to Gold and the voucher will expire anyway.
I can add the security fast track, but when the moment comes to “pay”, an error message pops up. (Same whether I add the fast track or not)
update: the upgrade came through at 19:35 Greek time tonight and check-in was possible. (36.5 hours before the flight). The positive about this is that we will both have access to the A3 lounge and won’t be deferred to the goldair one.
