Who sets the taxes? The partner airline? I'm hearing conflicting reports about who is to blame for some airlines being extortionate on award bookings and others (often on the same route) not...

The operating airline sets the fuel surcharges while legitimate taxes and charges (departure taxes and airport charges for example) gets set by countries and airports. Usually the outrageous part of taxes and fees is set by the operating airline in the form of fuel surcharges.

Has anyone received this error when redeeming on A3 website? What did you do next?
I called/twittered A3 to ask them to book it over the phone. They insist to charge me the booking fee despite sending these screenshots proving the IT glitch. The route is HKG-IST-IAD on TK if it makes any difference. Thanks

Just booked MXP-IST-UGC with TK - one way Business class for 55k + 190 EUR/person.

Would have loved to find availability in economy (DUB, LON or also from other European airports) but at the end of July that was impossible...

Any luck in availability of First Class seats with LX, LH, SQ from Asia to Europe or the other way round? Unfortunately I can't find anything through Aegean Airlines website...

From those 3 LH is the only one that releases F space to partners. LX hasn't for a long time and are defensive about it. Getting any premium SQ redemptions outside intra Asia flights is near impossible.
There have been reports that LH has been tightening F seat release windows for partners. In other words it might only open seats closer to departure then the historic 14 days.

Thanks for that ! I'll try to give them a call... might be I have more luck! Great to know there's some SQ redemptions available within Asia...that could be a second choice !

If that is the case, why can do prices sometime vary hugely from one program to another? E.g. LH redemptions using UA miles vs A3 miles.

Because a handful of ffp's don't pass on fuel surcharges .
United happens to be probably the best-known example of such a ffp.
Here are a few search results
Also... You could avoid paying them by flying out of a country, that prohibits them.

Yes - just flew on LH PVG-FRA-LHR two weeks ago, with PVG-FRA in F; The itinerary cost 90k miles + c.322 EUR

A few observations:
- redemption availability were only released 3-4 days prior to departure; When I booked the flight there were still 3 revenue seats available in F in PVG-FRA
- Best availability is likely to be from PVG, PEK or ICN (and these are good options since they are daytime flights which means you get to enjoy the F class experience a bit more I think)
- There is some weird married segment logic - on the day that I searched, HKG-FRA-IST is available (with HKG-FRA in F) but neither HKG-FRA nor HKG-FRA-LHR is available
- [I think this is well-reported but just as a reminder] There is quite a lot of fake LH F class availability on the A3 website, on flights that are operated by the LH A343 or B744, so make sure you double check the operating aircraft

This is very strange.... F on pvg-fra means the other segment was not in F, so a mixed cabin award, which with Aegean's Miles&Bonus doesn't just cost as many miles as F, but rather the miles for both flights (so an F+C redemption will cost 90k+25k = 115k miles). So how did this happen?
