Mama Shelter Lisboa

IMG_8361.jpeg

This was my 1st stay in a Mama Shelter. I didn’t really know what to expect as I never stayed before at Mama. Getting off the taxi, I entered a super noisy lobby with very loud music coming from the restaurant and guests playing loudly with the baby foot located in the hotel entrance. Then I almost bumped in a young couple who were kissing deeply and intensely in front of everyone near the front desk. I then noticed along the front desk some hotel branded accessories on sale which included sex toys! I really wondered for one second where I was. I was then welcomed at the front desk by a young girl in her 20’s with tattoos everywhere and plenty of piercings. Don’t get me wrong, most staff members were like that and most of them were super nice and friendly but it’s just that I think I’m too old now for that kind of “crazy hotels” ;)

IMG_8360.jpegIMG_8359.jpeg

The hotel is located near Marquês de Pombal square, not so far from the Sofitel. Metro station Rato is 100m from hotel.

Check In

Check-in formalities were quick. Drink voucher was not given, I asked for it and they told me that they don’t do it at Mama and that complimentary water bottles in the room are the welcome drink. Seriously…? Accor imagination at its best !

Room

I booked Medium Mama Double room. There is also small and large available. No upgrade provided. The Medium room was rather on the small side, so you really wonder how small is a Small room. OK for one person, but really small for 2 with the luggages.

IMG_8339.jpegIMG_8343.jpegIMG_8344.jpegIMG_8346.jpegIMG_8347.jpegIMG_8348.jpegIMG_8349.jpeg

There was a welcome amenity along with the 2 famous water bottles !

IMG_8345.jpeg

Room amenities included a safety box and slippers. Bed was comfortable and soundproofing was good. TV includes plenty of free movies on-demand but it was not working…

Bathroom was super small. Nowhere to place your stuff and the soap bar. Of course some eco blabla, but this time to justify the lack of (liquid) shampoo : the soap bar is also the shampoo… Really laughable.

IMG_8340.jpegIMG_8341.jpegIMG_8342.jpegIMG_8350.jpeg

Nice view from the room

IMG_8352.jpegIMG_8353.jpeg

Dining

As you can see, psychedelic ambiance in the restaurant. The breakfast buffet was of very good quality and the staff was very friendly in the morning.

IMG_8358.jpegIMG_8357.jpegIMG_8356.jpegIMG_8355.jpegIMG_8354.jpeg

Different situation in the evening : I already mentioned the loud music. One evening it was raining quite heavily and so we wanted to have dinner there. Impossible to have a table as it was fully booked and the lady at the entrance could not care less for hotel guests. As there is no room service available, we ended up ordering something with Uber Eats to be eaten in the very small room.

There is (likely nice) rooftop but it is currently closed for renovation.

Overall

Late checkout to 4 pm was refused because of said high occupancy (I got it till 1 pm). Overall, comfortable room but small and cramped and I didn’t feel “at my place” and lack of loyalty recognition. I am definitely not in the target clientele for Mama Shelter. Fine with this of course, OK for the young people. Happy to have tried once, but will likely not repeat the Mama experience.

Thanks for sharing!

The absurdity starts with the name of that chain and ends with, well...

The only positive aspect I can identify is the upgraded welcome amenity consisting of two dozen grapes instead of the usual 2.5 apples.

Then again, I may not be right target audience.

You were brave to even consider staying at one. Thanks for taking one for the team to let us know what we probably all assumed about a Mama Shelter!

Thank you for a nice review, Goldorak. I stayed at Mama Shelter Prague this week, it was also my first experience with this brand. I share some of your thoughts, the toiletries are laughable, the welcome amenity was almost identical, and my room was not cleaned until 4PM, when I returned back and had to call them to clean it asap. Your breakfast in Lisbon looks better than the one I had in Prague. What was better: room upgrade from M to L, welcome drink was a really nice French wine, early check-in and late check-out until 2PM without any problem. The bed and linen were great. What I was missing were coffee/tea making facilities, on the bright some, the TV had plenty of free porn flicks The bar and restaurant were also really good both in terms of quality and price.

I will probably return to Mama Shelter Prague, as I still have a few bookings from their winter sales promo, you just need to be prepared for what to expect. The thing I really do not understand is their price policy: the room rates are on par with Mercure/Novotel, yet you get points like for Ibis.

I noticed the same. For my last trip to Rome, I wanted to try eventually Mama there but it was in the 350 EUR range and less points than most brands. For Lisbon, I paid everything with points, so I didn't care about earning rate.

when i saw "goldorak + mama shelter" , i knew it would be epic and couldnt wait to see how it went for you

For a bit of context , mama shelter is in accor portfolio what moxxy is in marriott's portfolio , and is a brand clearly designed for millenials , gen Z and Alpha

By the way it's a french brand , it wasnt created by accor but joined the group later on

What i like with some of the "newest" brands like mama shelter is that they are trying things differently , which is something competitors don't do .

About toiletries , its true that recent accor policies aim to reduce then eliminate the use of single use plastic , however most hotels i have seen use now standard multi-usage bottles provided by accor , but i guess mama shelters are "not standardized" , so they have bit more freedom to decide , for the good or worst

About ALL benefits, it can be property or brand policy , but in this case i guess it is property's policy , cause for instance some mama shelter dont apply the members rates

About points earning , the mama shelter brand , despite being in midscale category , earns you same as ibis and ibis styles

i think tribe might be more suitable for you than mama shelter , and i would love to see you even one day in a jo&joe

Or if you have few bucks to invest , take a look at the first and brand new Mama Shelter Residences in Dubai

I love to take calculated risks

I think Moxy is more "classical"

Indeed; it was created by the Trigano family (Club Med) and sold to Accor.

Yes. No problem personally with the multi-use bottles, but using a soap bar as shampoo, seriously...no.

Although Mama Shelter is the only mainstream brand I know where free porn flix on the AVOD system are advertised as a benefit. Other brands (to the extend they still offer them at all) seem to think of those movies, not as something that cool milennials or Gen Zs would appreciate, but as something that shouldn't be talked about, and keeps middle-aged travelling salesmen coming back ("Separate bill for entertainment, Sir?").

I have been at two Mama Shelter and posted reviews here (Paris and Toulouse). I agree with Goldorak on most points (except soap bar for shampoo, I used that since I was a kid as my mother make them at home, great for your hair). I find those hotels horrible. And I am in the target segment since I am a millennial. Moxy is the same IMHO.

Yes , thats between tribe and mama shelter , but that brand is a kind of UFO in the market , so it seems either people hates it or loves it

Did you provide feedback about it ? If the hotel is well managed (in the sense that management listen to customers) , if they see that many people dont like this idea, then it might trigger a change

I know most of time we receive generic blendy automatic replies , but trust me many times i realised the teams are actually reading them , and even more effective way is to speak directly with GM or deputy GM and add this topic in your live feedback

LoL , yeah why not , they have a rooftop bar in vienna

Yes sure , will do it next time on my way to ORY

I stayed at jo&joe few times , i tested those in nation and gentilly , i really like the concept it was fun

For comparison , the main natural competitor , A&O , is still stucked in the 2000s

So long as you know what to expect before , i guess you wont feel like in the movie Les Visiteurs / The Visitors

I have worked for years at Accor HQ and i still don't understand how the brand Mama Shelter ended up in the group's portfolio...

For all other brands, there is a clear strategy and a real concept. But here it seems to be some kind of stupid concept to attract millenials? but this pricetag, they don't even stay there...

I know Sebastien Bazin always wants to try something new compared to previous CEOs who were always reluctant to take risks, but really, maybe i am stupid, or maybe i'm not in the target... I can stay in any other brands, but definitely not this one.
