hotel in Madrid: Mercure Plaza de Espana or Ibis Prado ?

Hi

i'm thinking about spending a weekend in Madrid

Mercure Santo Domingo would have been my choice but it seems to be very noisy

Mercure Plaza is a former Sofitel and still has it Sofitel beds, but i'm not very attracted by the old rustique decoration, it looks like 19th century, but reviews seem good

should i go for Ibis Styles Prado which seems to be the "newest" property in town ?

thanks for your advices and feedbacks

I stayed at the property when it was a Sofitel.

The superior rooms are smaller (as there is a small but pleasant balcony).
The design is very classic (read: uninspired and dated), service was smiling, breakfast quite good.
Location is central and very convenient (metro station close by).

Even if the property had nothing of a current Sofitel, we had a pleasant stay at this hotel.

Still, there are numerous better hotels in Madrid.

ok thanks for your feedback

of course, plenty of other choices, but i wanted to benefit from the 40th anniversary of Mercure

i finally booked this property

it kept its Sofitel beds, so it helped me pick this one

The prices for our dates in June are low enough (around 70 EUR for a basic room, just over 100 EUR for a suite) for me to be seriously considering this property.

well, you should

the property itself is not modern, but comfy and conveniently located

i know someone who recently stayed at the other one, and it was definitely much noisier

And it appears to be good value. Booked. Now I can transfer some of our Madrid budget from "hotels" to "eating".

hotel in Madrid: Mercure Plaza de Espana or Ibis Prado ?

Stayed at the Ibis Styles Prado last year. Make sure not to book an interior room as they do not have windows to the outside and get quite warm.

Here's a brief report following our stay at the Mercure Madrid Plaza de España, where we just spent five nights including last weekend.

Our "superior suite" on the top (sixth) floor was more junior than superior but still large and comfortable. The balcony was especially impressive -- no view worth mentioning, but plenty of space and an electrically operated retractable sunshade / rain cover.

The hotel is not in any way luxurious and no one would mistake it for a Sofitel. But it is clean and friendly and we would happily go back.

The location was even better than it had looked on the map. We ended up not needing a taxi once, easily returning from evenings in Salamanca, Retiro and Tetuán at or after midnight on the Metro. One station is just a block away and there are another two within easy walking distance, giving access to several different lines.

WiFi was fast and reliable and could be accessed on multiple devices.
