Lowest category rooms at the moment cost between 5,500 and 7,000 Thai Bhat with all taxes and service charges included.
At current exchange rates that's between 150 and 200 euro, or 150 and 200 US Dollars per night.

But if you compare similar location and configuration then Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport should be compared to the Sheraton in Roissy because both are litteraly on the opposite sidewalk of the main terminals, then you'll see that the Novotel is not that expensive.

The European hotels you are quoting are costing more than that most of the times. But, yes, the Novotel BKK has always been expensive for Thailand.

Passed by here recently.
There are 2 ways to get to the Novotel hotel from main part of the airport.
Method 1 (Shuttle Van)
Go to level 2 (main arrivals area) and walk to the large exit number 4 that leads outside where the cars pass by. To the right of exit 4 (before going outside) is a small white desk with the Novotel logo and some staff from the hotel there. They will check if you have a reservation, and will call a shuttle van that will take you the short journey to the hotel. The shuttle basically does an enormous circle around the hotel to the front entrance. Takes about 5 minutes driving.
Method 2 (Walking yourself via underground passageway)
Go to the basement level and walk to where the tickets counters for the trains into central Bangkok are. There are some signs that say "Airport hotel" without specifying the word "Novotel". Follow these until you walk past all the train ticket counters, all the booths selling stuff, all the capsule hotels and box hotels, and keep going straight. Eventually you will see signs that DO say the word "Novotel" with a green background. Follow these. At a certain point you will be walking through an area where all the stores are totally empty, gutted, and abandoned. Do not worry...but keep going straight and eventually you get to the end of the underground passageway where you have to take a ramp and escalator (or ramp and elevator) back up to the ground floor where the hotel is. Takes about 10 minutes walking.
Going back to the airport is the same.

For someone using that underground passageway for this first time, it feels pretty long, especially when you pass by that final area with all the abandoned and gutted shops...definitely feels like you're going the wrong way when you reach that strange area. Once you've done it back and forth twice, of course it will feel shorter and faster.

The shuttle is free (both ways) as long as you have a room booked at the Novotel.

I am hopeful that the overpriced hotel which is Novotel BKK is about to be crushed by Courtyard by Marriott which should open in the upcoming months. If CY turns out to be overpriced as well, then at least I would rather stay at an overpriced hotel which is brand new rather than an overpriced ANG aging hotel like Novotel.
I almost never elect to stay at Novotel BKK due to price but at CY I might stay on occasion.
Maybe, just maybe, Novotel BKK will decrease their prices once competition opens.

I have had a couple of recent stays here. As Accor Gold, I have been met at the BKK luggage belt and escorted to their hotel shuttle bus. I agree with PabloM’s assessment, although I have never been upgraded to a suite. I commented further on a recent stay here:

To clarify, Gold members do not get lounge access.

I haven't stayed at this Novotel after Covid, but before, when being Platinum or Diamond, you had a free welcome at the baggage claim and escort to the hotel.
