Who knows, maybe tying to one carrier in each country will come back to haunt them.
They may get sweetheart deals but it may hold sales down ultimately costing them marketshare against a company like RIMM, which is providing their product to every carrier they can.
I'm sure wireless carriers have to bid on exclusive contracts. In time the iphone will be made unlocked. Apple did the right thing-letting some carrier pay big bucks for a few years then they'll make it unlocked with far better features and people will buy again.
I doubt Apple cares if the phone is hacked or unlocked. The have to create "software upgrades" to keep ATT happy.
