LH introduced HON Circle status on December 1st 2004 and credited HON Circle miles from January 1st 2003 until March 31st 2006 (= 3 ¼ years) for flights on UA metal.

As there is no reason why a competitor (= UA) should pay a premium to offer their customers an opportunity to gain status in a competitors FFP (Miles & More), I call this explanation naive. A realistic approach: LH makes it more difficult for their clients to gain/maintain HON Circle membership.
