I wasn't aware of the luxury tax in the front of my brain, no. But the DEL/BOM RTW for a DONE3 is $5400, so that only takes the base up to ~$6,000. I think, in Asia, only NRT is less (at roughly $5,400). But for that $600, if I understand correctly, I gain the ability (after April 1) to use NRT as a transit stop between Europe and India. If I ticket my DONE2 ex-NRT, if I understand the rules correctly, I can't transit Japan between Europe and Asia because I will have touched my 'home soil' and can't leave again.
Right now, my needs are: SFO, PRG, and DEL. (And I live in SFO/SJC).
So I'm picturing DEL-HKG-SFO/SFO-LAX-LHR-PRG/PRG-LHR-DEL as the "core" routing.
From there I would see what works for a little extra mileage, or just plain old alternatives on the dates I need to travel -- i.e., I could see LHR-DEL being LHR-NRT-DEL or LHR-BKK-HKG-DEL if need be.
