I did try again when the check in window opened, and at that point instead of an error messsge I did get the option of selecting a price for which I’d be willing to be bumped off the flight, but still no option to select an alternative flight. Oh well.

in my experience, it always switches over at the checkin window from offers to change your flight to the bidding system.
the recent time i was offered a change of flights in exchange for compensation, it was between 24 and 36 hours before departure. I was really surprised, but figured they must REALLY have been sure they were overbooked to pay me that early..
