Perhaps it errors out if they have gotten enough volunteers to change flights and no longer need more. But even if that's the case, it's a lame experience for customers vs. a "thanks but we're good now, better luck next time lol"
In my case I think I responded almost instantly when the email popped up.
I did try again when the check in window opened, and at that point instead of an error messsge I did get the option of selecting a price for which I’d be willing to be bumped off the flight, but still no option to select an alternative flight. Oh well.
