Have a flight in about 2 months to departure, so obviously a little early to be placing bets...but I also can't remember a flight I've had in the past 10 years where the map was so empty at this point. This is also, barring some additional travel between now and then the flight I cross the official 1MM-as-far-as-United-knows...
he front half of the plane currently looks (and since booking has looked) like the below. I'm in Y waitlisted for J and PY. Expert Mode has been showing a consistent J9 JN9 C9 D9 Z9 ZN9 P9 PN0 PZ0 IN0 I0 O9 ON9 A9
R5 RN0 Y9... Except when I started paying attention R was 0, and about every 2-3 days R has been ticking up by one (e.g. Saturday it was R4, Wednesday it was R3, last week it was R2, ... ) Irrationally hoping that perhaps once it hits some magic number RN will open itself up. (Of course that's not the ultimate goal, but I'll take what I can get for a 15 hour flight... the cash buy up is not remotely justifiable, though)
I mean c'mon United... you have 60
unsold unassigned seats in J, wouldn't you rather have 40 PP back in exchange for one of those ?!?

Just to close the loop on this one... Got home 4 hours late yesterday (from a trip touching LGW, LIS, ZRH, IAD, and CLE in the span of about 35 hours... Sane I am not

) -- woke up still a little delirious this morning, 34 days to departure, to an email from United that my upgrade for EWR-DXB had cleared... Didn't believe it at first as the email said "
We’re excited to let you know we’re upgrading your seat to United Polaris business" but the "Upgrade Request Type" showed "Economy - United Premium Plus" -- but sure enough looking at my reservation I have a seat in J
Now the only thing that has me slightly concerned is the reservation shows I'm waitlisted for the return but United shows 0 PP requested... There's no upgrade inventory in either cabin currently so I'm not too worried but always a little anxious. It's currently 9s across the board so *fingers crossed* -- definitely not counting on either of the domestic segments going anywhere.
