Allow me to offer a counter-perspective (thought personally I agree with your assessment). There are many premium flyers that complain about the crowds in J lounges. Many premium flyers, especially ones that pay full fares, don't appreciate having to sit with 3-5 strangers around them in close proximity, toe-to-toe. Have made comments to CX and let them know that if there's another premium airline serving the same route around the same time (such as SQ), lounge comfort is a big factor in the decision. The ball is in CX's court to evaluate: are these just loud complaints from a few and most premium flyers are happy to stay with CX, or, do these complains represents enough premium flyers that lounge changes would entice them to fly with CX more offsetting potential losses in devaluation of SL lounge benefits? The most likely scenario is not denied SL lounge access completely but make some limitations and adjustments. But unfortunately, no access is on the table.
I'm not convinced SQ's HKG lounge is any better than any of CX's J lounges. I still think CX J is superior to SQ.
