Who issued your ticket? I have 2 experiences of an involuntary change with a QF ticket and they were pretty good about dealing with it. One time they let me bundle in several other changes that would otherwise be chargeable, the other time they didn't, they processed the invol first then went back to the other changes I wanted (that were chargeable).
On my CX ticket I don't think I ever had any significant airline cancellations / changes so never came up, but CX has generally been pretty decent to deal with anyway.
