If you want to extend the validity of your QF account, there's lots of ways to do that - you can transfer a point from AMEX to Qantas if you have an AMEX card, you can buy something through the Qantas shopping portal, I suspect booking a flight that touches the US and then cancelling it within 24 hours would also work.
With a fair amount of points worth some effort to keep alive. Some vendors post QF points immediately and others can take weeks. Check if you can.

If driving/renting a car buying fuel from BP easy to do. But unsure in need to be AU resident to sign up/link with BP. And check if "Participating bp sites only"
