They do consistently use "complimentary" status to describe it. During COVID they did as well and it came with no choice benefits. "Members can choose complimentary Medallion Status" ----text from Delta.
This sentence by itself qualifies as a grammatical emergency: "Members can choose (i.e. buy with their choice benefit currency) complimentary medallion status." By that logic I bought myself a good number of complimentary bottles of wine in my lifetime.
