Western Med (i.e., west of Italy to the strait of Gibraltar) can be very rough. First night out of "Rome" headed to Spain had gale force winds (Mistral, Tramontane, Scirocco perhaps) and rather big swells. Even resulted in some port of call cancellations on the ship's previous voyage.
Eastern Med (east of Italy to Turkey) appears to be more sheltered.
I didn’t want to be the party pooper, but that was my experience as well. Wave height equal to what I’ve seen in the Caribbean. Winds strong enough to keep us off the balcony. May 2016 western med.
