I cannot understand why Marriott can't figure this out. I mean, I would understand if they just said "we're never going to invest in this - it isn't worth it to us". But the fact that they seem to have half-tried it, still talk about it, and it never works is bizarre.
This has been my experience as well. I check in on the app, the app tells me to go to the front desk upon arrival (completely defeating the purpose of mobile check-in), and then the FDA issues me a physical key without asking. I don’t bother fighting them on it at that point because I just want to go to my room. I’ve never once had mobile key work at any Marriott property I’ve stayed at worldwide.
Why claim it’s available if it never works?
