That is what the AA RTW Agent told me.

The RTW ticket I have just started (and which I purchased from AA) has an AA transatlantic flight (AA codeshare on Royal Air Maroc flight) and that was all I needed to have for AA to agree to ticket.

The AAgents have always talked about the requirement being for an "over water flight". I have always assumed that to mean either a transatlantic or a transpacific flight. I don't know if other inter-continental flights would be acceptable, for example North to South America.
