People who expect free elite breakfast at EDITION hotels just have reading comprehension or entitlement issues. I think it’s stupid that Marriott don’t offer this benefit at one of their flagship brands but those are the rules.
As to upgrades, I’ve been well treated at the EDITIONs I’ve stayed, with the exception of the TS EDITION (initially - later upgraded after complaint to GM). I think they aren’t actually stingy for the most part (the USA hotels are usually stingy in general, so I don’t expect much there), but it’s often a function of low numbers of premium rooms at the better EDITION hotels that are designed in a boutique style.
