Did you get DL to allow you to use the return?
My only similar experience was on PMNW. I had a flight cancelled that was scheduled for 12/31 - and it would have kept my Plat status for another year. Actually flew on 1/1. I contacted NW and they just gave the Plat status - without the 12/31 flight I was a few hundred miles short.
You don't say how many miles you will be short. This is one where a brief well explained letter up the corporate chain may work out for you.
