Has this sneaky merchant thing happened to you with VAN's? Or is it more a theory that "it could happen?" I've never heard of a merchant somehow getting your replacement card number. Regardless, it's quite a difference between a replacement card number and a card number that is no long valid and doesn't have a replacment number.

My data points for myself give me assurance the VAN will work as intended: when you pay someone online in a situation you don't want them to have full access to your account. But if you or others have recent experience of nefarious merchants behaving to the contrary, it'd be good to hear it.
My experience has been that expiration date and disabling VAN work as intended, but $ limit does not.

Again it’s back in the Adobe Air days, when it’s just $ limit instead of daily $ limit. Perhaps Citi finally fixed it.
