I certainly remember when their products would not work reliably with non Apple charging cables a few years back. My desktop combo watch/Airpod/Qi phone charger pad gets hot if I charge my phone with a medium thick case on it, but stays room temp without the case. I don't blame Apple for that. Maybe your case is the issue.
I don’t use a case with my iPhone when using a Qi charger. Performing a Windows like reboot resolves the problem. Apple specifically mentions the 12 product line works with Qi certified chargers. This is an issue for Apple to resolve because of their claim.
