Thank you all for the feedbacks!

Anyway under a somewhat benevolent reading of EC261/2004 they should offer you a hotel, and I'd hope that they would offer you accommodation.
No refund needed, I just thought that as the new layover might allow to spend the night at home or with friends and drop off a luggage before continuing the rest of the trip the day after, maybe it was worth a try - not a big deal if not possible then - Paris is a such lovely city

Initially, AF995 was planned to leave as all EU airlines departing JNB do - in the evening, thus the morning arrival would allow to enjoy enough ( for the 1st time ever) CDG best lounge.
Agree with you that now with the 21h stop, it does not seem attractive as before!

What happened to make the transit so long?
If this is on a single PNR and this is caused by a schedule change, then AF would pay a hotel night.

But I understand that AF995 will start operating as a day flight (landing in CDG at 19:45) starting on 30 March 2020.
You have to see with them if they are willing to pay hotel as AF702 departs at 14:40 the next day. On a paid ticket, I would expect them to offer you hotel. That's a 19h transit and I find it too risky to take an extra return flight in-between.
But the AF/JNB staff should be willing to check your bags through ABJ. Getting the LP escort service to/from your domestic flight is iffy.
The single PNR ticket was booked in P with miles days before the recent increase on LP awards. At that time the cheapest route (with current timings) was picked to burn some miles and obviously also to experience this product.

After the schedule change mail, I noticed that a return domestic trip could be done (easily without checked luggage) or with the help - only if possible - of AF JNB staff with a checked luggage!

I would definitely prefer this solution rather than getting the free hotel night. If proved too risky, the 6 am inbound flight that lands at 7ish at CDG will get my favours for extra peace of mind ( providing a comfy 7h buffer time until the ABJ flight)!

And I don't care about the LP services on the domestic sectors since, in that specific case, they are not normally part of the protocol.

Hope it makes sense now - I have yet to call them to confirm the choice (as for the moment viewing the booking still shows the "new" JNB flight lands well after ABJ took off ) but I would like to know first what is allowed/possible or not...
