The first part of your post is correct. You only get points if you pay for both rooms, same as SPG. What is different is SPG allowed you to get stay credit for multiple rooms. Marriott only allows one.

The other person who paid for the second room is entitled to the points/stay credit for that room. Hotel is wrong.
