You can keep WR points long term, but you have to stay on top of the tricks to do it. You presumably have not been reading this Wyndham forum much this year, or would have heard about some of these tricks, including transferring to La Quinta Rewards and back before LQ+WR merged their programs a few months ago. If you had done that, your 17k points would be expiring in 2023 by now. Something sort of similar with Total Rewards is I think still possible.
