So you don't choose to be loyal TO A CHAIN based on location, you choose based on other factors. And if you choose Hilton Honors based on the location of one or two specific hotels, then you are indeed missing something...
You seem to be operating under the assumption that one actually needs to be loyal to a chain.

I'm of the opinion that many people are pledging loyalty for things that aren't of great value. Free breakfast is irrelevant to any business traveler working for a decent company. And upgrades to larger rooms aren't important to a lot of single travelers. (If traveling with friends or family and you need that larger room, the fact that upgrades are based on availability makes it a useless benefit.)

Being loyal and becoming a top-level elite is really smart for some people. But, it's not smart for everyone.
