I tried to do some reading on this and the closest I got to a description of a "special" WiFi network was a blog entry about some hotel chain that charged for WiFi and was looking at a combination of the MAC address and TTL field of the packets they were receiving to tell if they were from a router or an endpoint device and were black-holing the former! The blogger had customized his travel router that ran OpenWRT to work around this.
