I don’t know DEN well, but it seems like a bit of a tough market for airlines other than UA, WN, and F9, especially on a hub-to-hub market for UA (NYC-DEN). There are lots of complaints in the AS forum that AS can’t even maintain service there from PDX or SFO, which are of course much shorter flights than NYC and arguably more important hubs to AS than NYC is to AA (and which lack geographically logical online connecting options, whereas NYC-ORD/DFW-DEN are pretty direct). Going against the bloodbath of local airlines at DEN seems like a tall order. And AA has long operated NYC-EGE etc flights for the skiing crowd.
