Strictly speaking the policy says not refunds but some agents will see the issue and do a partial refund. I would first try the MileagePlus Service Center vs Reservations.

BTW, a bit OT but related, if the un-upgraded segment was booked as a Polaris cabin segment, a refund is possible --

That occasionally happens but the policy has long been to pull the miles at request (to make they will be available when needed)
Miles and/or CoPay not deducted on award booking/ upgrade
