They can not legally prohibit you from getting an Uber or Grab on a public street. We try to remain low key, and address the driver by his/her first name.

I use Uber all the time in Bali but indeed, they will always ask to meet somewhere quiet and act as if you are friends with them. Really different compared to Jakarta where Uber/Grabcar/Go-car is everywhere and very normal. On top of that, many taxi drivers in Bali can be quite rude and if you are a 'bule' they will often offer you an unmetered price. Always ask to use 'argo'(meter) unless you have a clear idea about the prices.
