It not an idea that has come and gone - Delta does perfectly fine with heavily banked schedules at many of their hubs, and has a strong on-time rating to show for it.
Delta also has decent scheduling though, so that you don't have to be forced into a choice between a stupid 35 minute transfer or a 4+ hour layover on the majority of flights like AA seems to prefer.
