The other week when starting my trip to SIN, my first flight was AY operated HEL-LHR. I've booked the emergency exit row aisle seat well in advance, as with my height that is more or less the only comfortable seat on AY's A32X fleet. The plane was supposed to be an A320, but when boarding noticed that we were getting on an A319. My seat was number wise exactly what I've asked for, but it was one row behind the exit row, due to the aircraft's different size...
Last year flying out of MUC I reserved an exit row seat during OLCI at about T-30h. On bag-drop counter I noticed my seat row had changed and asked from the agent why the exit row seat had changed. 'But it is an exit row seat' answered the agent.
There had been an equipment change from A320 to A321 after my OLCI but my exit row seat remained. Of course it is a different story on changing to smaller aircraft where the number of exit row seat goes down too.
