Although ryan754 doesn't care, I still have the same sympathy for him regardless - it's not a situation I've heard about before, and puts some of our minor complaints into focus (although I'll still sure as hell complain about them).

Right now we have some great advice (SkiAdcock hit the nail on the head), and as usual for incidents I'd say to see what the hotel offers, and compare it against the compensation you'd be willing to accept.

Regarding the comped room aspect, I always weigh that against whether I'm paying for my travel or my customer/employer. If the later, then I usually request additional point compensation based on that room rate, as it has no benefit to me if they save others money, and I don't earn the points that I spend on my wife.

For the Etro shirt (yes, name dropping annoys me as much as everyone else, but doesn't affect my sympathy), I've had the exact same compensation for a shirt destroyed by the hotel's dry cleaner in SFO.
